Riverton is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 38,753 at the 2010 census. Riverton is located in the southwest corner of the Salt Lake Valley between the Oquirrh Mountains to the west and the Wasatch Mountains to the east. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.5 square miles (42.7 km2), all land. The city is traversed by the Jordan River which flows north to south through the center of the valley. The Riverton area was originally settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847, just a few months after the first Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley. It was Utah's first settlement outside of Salt Lake City.
