Fountain Inn is located in the northwest corner of Greenville County, and a small portion of the city extends into Laurens County to the southwest. U.S. Route 276 passes through the center of the city, leading northeast 19 miles (31 km) to downtown Greenville and southwest 28 miles (45 km) to Greenwood. South Carolina Highway 418 crosses US 276 in the center of Fountain Inn, leading southeast 15 miles (24 km) to Interstate 385 at Clinton and northwest 28 miles (45 km) to Laurens. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Fountain Inn has a total area of 6.3 square miles (16.3 km2), of which 6.2 square miles (16.1 km2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2), or 1.52%, are water.
