Matawan is a borough located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 8,810, reflecting an increase of 1,019 (+13.1%) from the 7,791 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,135 (+17.1%) from the 6,656 counted in the 1990 Census. Matawan was originally incorporated as a town by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 12, 1895, from portions of Matawan Township. On November 15, 1953, Matawan was reconstituted as a borough.
