Linden is a city in Union County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city's population was 40,499, reflecting an increase of 1,549 (+4.0%) from the 38,950 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,235 (+3.2%) from the 37,715 counted in the 1990 Census. Linden was originally formed as a township on March 4, 1861, from portions of Elizabeth, Rahway and Union Township. Portions of the township were taken to form Linden Borough on March 27, 1882. The city's name derives from linden trees brought from Germany. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city had a total area of 11.407 square miles (29.543 km2), including 11.340 square miles (29.393 km2) of land and 0.067 square miles (0.149 km2) of water (0.59%). Linden is bordered to the north by Roselle and Roselle Park, to the west by Elizabeth, to the southwest by Union and Hillside, to the southeast by Rahway and to the east by Clark. Unincorporated communities, localities and place names located partially or completely within the city include Bayway, Grasselli, Tremley and Tremley Point.
