Granite City is a city in Madison County, Illinois, United States, within the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. The population was 29,849 at the 2010 census, making it the second largest city in the Metro East region after Belleville. Granite City was founded in 1866 by William Rummel, who purchased a tract of land between the Mississippi River and the Illinois River. The city was named for its proximity to the former site of the Granite City Works, a stone quarry that provided material for the construction of the Eads Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.
