The area was originally inhabited by the Hohokam people, who built extensive irrigation canals that supported their agriculture. Scottsdale's modern development began in the early 20th century, when it was founded as a retirement community for wealthy Midwesterners. The city has since evolved into a thriving destination for tourists and retirees, as well as a center for the arts and shopping. The city is home to a number of museums and cultural attractions, including the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, and the Scottsdale Fashion Square. The city also boasts a thriving nightlife scene, with a number of bars and clubs located in the downtown area.
